Cleaning your cat's ears - by Bonnie (Iteru Kefa) in Auckland

Bonnie (Iteru Kefa) sent us some lovely photos and some very interesting insights on cats and their grooming.
Bonnie says:
Even though cats are constantly licking and grooming themselves, it is important to check your cat’s ears and clean them if you notice any dirt, wax or debris. Regular ear care at home will help reduce the likelihood of ear infections and excess waxy build up. To clean your cat's ears, use an ear cleaning solution provided by your vet. Or alternatively, adopt an ex-racing greyhound  :-)
I have been living with my cat Hootie since May this year, and I daresay his ears have NEVER been cleaner, due to my superb cleaning routine!
Below are some pictures of me grooming Hootie, and step-by-step instructions.
Love, Bonnie and Hootie The Cat
First, get the cat to lie down somewhere comfy, like your bed, or a couch or similar.
To start, wash the top of your cat's head
...then outside of an ear
And of course the inside. Don't worry if the ear turns inside out at this point - it happens
to me with Hootie all the time, but you have to make sure you clean every last spot
Repeat for the other ear and don't forget to wash the cat's face and nose at the end
After this -you deserve a break and a cuddle with your favourite human!
If you are lucky enough (and if your cat is as cool as my Hootie!) , your cat may return the favour! Hootie uses my method for cleaning my ears too:

Update from Nugget (Pepper Law)

We just got an update from Nugget (as dictated to her new Mum Carla!). Nugget now lives with Carla, Ed and Peppa The Cat on lifestyle block just outside Hastings in Hawkes Bay.
Thanks a million for gorgeous pictures Carla!

Nugget's diary, week 1:

Sunday: My new people picked me up from Sanson GAP Kennels today. Here I am saying goodbye to Irene:
Oh my, the cartrip was long & I got a little bored & almost upset, but these new people handled me well, settled me back onto the backseat, strapped my carseat back on & off we went. We stopped to stretch our legs at a place called "Danny work", but we didn't see Danny.... Anyway, we finally got to what the people call lifestyleblock outside the town where the "hay stings"?! I'm sure glad I don't eat hay, although I am giving the grass here a good go! I tried the couch out, but got told off by these people, so I don't think I'm allowed on it.

Stretching legs at Dannevirke
Monday: Oh dear. I had to sleep here. The lady woke me up at 6 am; we went for a walk. At 6:30 I had my breakfast. There's another furry thing here. She also got to have her breakfast, but I wasn't allowed to check what it was. I think the lady said the furrball's name is Peppa & she'd be very upset if I'd get too close. Here she is -observing me from a safe spot:

After breakfast I heard a car go off, and realised that the friendly man was not here! Wondered where he'd gone, but not for too long. At some stage during the day, I got off the lead & ran into the gate-thing at the end of the thing that the lady-mum says is NOT a racecourse. Ouch. She was very upset, bandaged me up (too much) & now I'm not allowed off the lead & my collar is fitting tightly.
Oh, I didn't see the gate... Lucky mum's a nurse. Although, I think she overdid it a little...
Tuesday: Um, cannot remember much. I think I slept alot & ate all the food in sight. Bandages came off & I'm fine. That evening my friendly man-dad took me for a walk. I had to think about it though. In the middle of the road. So, he picked me up & carried me home. Hie-hie! Gotcha. But the lady-mum was very upset. She told him not to do that (darn) & to keep me on a tight / short lead. Sigh...

Wednesday: Oh, we went in to town! We visited one of mum's friends & went for a walk in Anderson Park in Napier! There was lots of feathery things floating on the water. Fascinating! But mum said not to get close / into the water. Was a great walk, though. Then we went to where the Hay stings & visited dad at that place where he brings the bacon home from. I dazzled everyone there.
Anderson Park in Napier. There are lots of feathery things floating on the water. I think one was drowning, but mum wouldn't let me go save it...
Thursday: Just chillaxed at home. Dad's still building my run, so I sit with him on the verandah in the evenings. Peppa's helping him as well. I tried to get her to play, but she doesn't seem the playfull type. :-( We watched the races on TV, especially to see how well the Schofield dogs are doing.

Friday: This morning I played with mum & my toys. She was bushed she said! I enjoyed it. I feel very confident now & have been gathering a few things on my bed to make me feel more at home. Mum says her socks have grown feet, but I can't really see any feet on them ?? She phoned dad to tell him that his shoe also walks around by itself. Mum chatted with Irene and with Fatima on the phone. Now she seems a little different... I need to turn up the charm a little bit more I think...

I am very pretty!
Sunday: Mum & I joined the other very friendly human & very gorgeous canine Hawke's Bay GAP'ers for a coffee & run on the Clifton Beach!!!!!!!  It was great! I was a star, i  enjoyed it so much ! I think Mum is totally proud of me! Check out the pictures below:

Update from Sally (Beach Street)

Angelic Sally :)
I just got an update and gorgeous pictures from Margaret and Peter  from Waikanae, who adopted Sally (Beach Street) just over 2 weeks ago.
Sally is a stunning looking brindle ex-racer, whom we have fostered before she went to her forever home. I have written about Sally's adventures with us on this blog here.

Margaret and Peter wrote:

Today (27 August) is Day 16! We collected Sally from Sonja and Irene after she had been fostered by Fatima for about 10 days. Having been exposed to the comforts of domestic life she didn’t have to start from
scratch here. No problems with things like glass doors or loud household noises e.g. vacuum cleaner, etc. And she bonded to her own day couch in short order but still tries our one out occasionally - we did have a tiny water pistol to discourage this but she crunched it up on the second day! :-)
A few days after she arrived we took her to Robyn's place at Otaki for a run with a couple of other hounds and she certainly showed her paces!
We wondered how Sally and our cat, Timmy, would interact. Well, no worries there! Initially heard a few yelps from Sally so Timmy is definitely in charge and has chased her down the hallway several times. Timmy is becoming more relaxed and we think he realises that she is here for keeps.

We have just installed a dog door and Sally appears to be getting the hang of it. Her long back legs are a bit of a hassle!
Sally is becoming more confident around the home. This was especially apparent on day 15 when she pushed the boundaries all day (perhaps to see who really is the boss?) but we are awake to her wiles! Getting her to wait until released to eat her food is our biggest challenge at the moment. :-)
Sally delights us - she is indeed, a joy to have.
Bones are Beaut!!!!!

Yep, this will do me!

In full flight: Shannon, Cilla and Harry :-)
Today we took 6 greyhounds for a run at Kyrewood riding school (the owners kindly let us use their securely fenced paddock :-))
Hounds had a fantastic time running through the mud!

The team: Beryl (Winsome Deluxe), Louie (Charlston State) and Lucy, our foster girl Cilla, and two Sanson greyhounds currently available for adoption: Shannon (Moon Dancer) and Harry (Mohican Harry).

Some pictures have , of course, turned out all blurry, but i cant resist posting them anyway :

Update from Grace (Lady Lianne)

Pretty Grace :-)
Donna from Wellington adopted little Grace (Lady Lianne) exactly a month ago, and today she sent me some gorgeous pictures and an update (Thanks a million Donna!).

Donna says:
Grace makes me very happy and is a joy to have. If I leave work in a grumpy mood there is no way I can stay like that once I get home! She makes me laugh so much :-) She gets called Amazing Grace, Princess Grace and sometimes DisGrace!
She's also a good watchdog and barks at strangers which is excellent as I am single and live down a long driveway.

As you can see, she loves her bed and it's beside the heater. Sometimes she huffs and puffs because she's got really hot but she won't move away.

Her favourite toy is the fluffy womble. She takes it into the middle of the lounge, throws it in the air, catches it and then launches herself into her bed again. She does that quite a few times, has a good gnaw on it then collapses into a heap, exhausted.

She's also a collector and puts everything in her bed for safekeeping...shoes, slippers, wallet, keys, pens, cellphone, knitting (luckily the only damage was dog slobber). I even have to keep my handbag on the couch because she will undo the domes on it and nick stuff out of it. At least I know where to look if anything goes missing. :-)

Grace tuckered out after demolishing a Flybuys catalogue!!!
She managed to snaffle a packet of chocolate muffins which had been put on the dining table. She'd eaten 4½ by the time I'd caught her. She looked dead pleased with herself! She's not interested in anything I'm eating but any unattended food is fair game and disappears quickly if she can get at it.

She loves her morning walks and now recognises the driveway and turns in without prompting.

Chloe, the Jack Russell from next door, sometimes scoots under the gate for a visit. They're still a bit wary of each other but I'm sure they'll end up being friends.:-)
